Paul Chitwood serves as the president of the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He spoke at both the Pastors Conference and during the IMB report at the recent Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Anaheim, CA. Dr. Chitwood also was a panelist at a special presentation held at the Cooperative Program booth located in the Convention exhibit hall. I heard some of his comments while passing near the CP booth.

During a session of the SBC annual meeting in Anaheim last week I observed a young man (defined as younger than me) wearing a blue t-shirt which presented the exhortation “Live Your Calling.” Later, while walking through the Convention Center with about 8,000 other messengers, I saw a banner for the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary at a distance that offered the same challenge…”Live Your Calling.”

Father’s Day is a special time of reflection for me. Father’s Day 2022 is no exception as this year marks the 50th anniversary of my baptism. In fact, both my older brother and I were baptized on that meaningful day in June 1972.

MEN WHO PROTECT: WATCHING…WARNING…WAITING

In ancient Israel, watchmen were appointed to stand on the city wall or on a tower as sentinels who protected the city by looking out for possible physical threats and warning the people of potential danger (Isaiah 21:6-7; 2 Kings 9:17). Watchmen also served as protectors of farms and field by standing in watchtowers and keeping watch for thieves and others who might threaten the crop or the laborers (Matthew 21:3). Failure by the watchmen to be attentive to their task of keeping watch and reporting danger left the community vulnerable to attack and demise.

Likely you have heard the tale of the man who sought to train a new horse by issuing simple commands. Thus, when the owner wanted his young colt to go, he used the command “Praise the Lord!” Similarly, when he wanted the horse to stop, the owner would holler “Hallelujah!”

DON’T FORGET TO REMEMBER

Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day began as a time to remember soldiers who died during the Civil War. Families and communities gathered on May 30 each year to decorate the graves of these fallen soldiers with flowers and other commemorative items. After World Wars I & II and the Korean War and in the midst of the Vietnam War, Congress established Memorial Day as a federal holiday to encourage American citizens to remember our soldiers who had paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The last Monday of May was declared as the appointed time for this special observance.

My four-year old great-nephew likes clothes, costumes, toys, and other items associated with popular “super heroes” such as Batman, Spiderman, and Super Man. Currently, Spiderman appears to be his favorite inasmuch as he wore a Spidey costume at his birthday party a few weeks ago.
